Publishing guide

Reddit marketing and community rules

A practical guide to evaluating subreddit rules, commercial intent, claims, links and publishing risk before a brand contributes.

The short version

  • Treat every subreddit as a separate community with its own rules and expectations.
  • Review commercial intent, affiliation requirements, links and supported claims before writing begins.
  • A useful contribution should answer the actual question even if the reader never visits the brand website.
  • Record approvals, publication status, removals and rule changes instead of hiding unsuccessful activity.

01

Read the community before writing

Reddit does not operate as one uniform publishing channel. Each subreddit has its own purpose, rules, moderation approach and tolerance for commercial participation. A format accepted in one community may be removed in another.

Review the current rules, pinned moderator posts and recent discussions before deciding that a community is suitable. The practical standard is not only whether a rule technically permits a contribution, but whether the contribution fits how the community actually works.

  • Promotion and self-promotion rules
  • Requirements for affiliation or commercial disclosure
  • Restrictions on links, surveys, announcements and direct offers
  • Account age, karma or participation requirements
  • Moderator guidance in pinned posts and removal notices

02

Assess commercial intent honestly

A brand contribution has commercial context even when it is educational. The right question is not how to disguise that context. The right question is whether the participation is allowed, appropriately disclosed where required and useful enough to justify its place in the discussion.

If a community prohibits the activity, the contribution should not be published there. If disclosure is required by the rules or context, the planned content should include it. This decision belongs in the opportunity record before a draft is approved.

03

Make the answer useful on its own

A useful reply should resolve part of the reader's problem inside Reddit. It should not depend on a click, vague brand praise or a claim that cannot be checked. Product relevance can be stated plainly, but the practical information needs to carry the contribution.

Specific steps, limitations, decision criteria and trade-offs usually create more value than broad claims. The answer should also match the depth of the question. A technical discussion needs technical substance, while a straightforward buyer question needs a direct and readable response.

  • Answer the question before mentioning a product
  • State limitations and unsuitable use cases where relevant
  • Use only claims the brand can support
  • Avoid invented experience, false independence or manufactured consensus
  • Keep the tone consistent with the surrounding discussion

05

Separate approval from publication

Client approval confirms that the contribution is accurate and acceptable to the brand. It does not override subreddit rules or guarantee that publication remains appropriate. Perform a final context check before content goes live because threads, rules and discussion tone can change.

The publication record should include the approved copy, account used, date, destination, disclosure decision and live status. This makes later review possible without relying on memory or scattered messages.

06

Treat removals as information

A removal should be recorded and investigated, not hidden. Review the stated rule, moderator context, account condition and whether the contribution still matched the discussion at the time it was published.

Do not repost the same material automatically. Adjust future selection and writing decisions, and contact moderators only when the community's process allows a respectful clarification. A low removal rate should come from better judgment, not repeated attempts to bypass moderation.
